be influenced by several genetic factors.6 'The higher rate in the males might be accounted for by the assumption that the male sex stimulates the instability. Experiments are now in progress which are expected to throw more light on this problem. Summary.-Miniature-3 gamma gene is unstable in somatic cells. The results of experiments in which the flies carrying this gene were reared at 30 = 0.2, 25 = 1 and 20 =L 0.2 degrees centigrade, respectively, are interpreted to indicate that these temperature differences have not produced any effect on the instability of the gene. It has been found that the frequency of gene changes was alike in males and in females in spite of the fact that a female carries approximately twice the number of miniature genes carried by a male.

A Cytological Demonstration of the Location of an Interchange between Two Non-homologous Chromosomes of Zea Mays.

It has been suggested (Brink, r Brink and Burnham2) that semisterility in maize is associated with some form of chromosomal change involving non-homologous chromosomes. Burnham reported the presence of a ring of four chromosomes in diakinesis in such semisterile plants which could be explained by assuming either translocation or segmental interchange. Plants showing a ring of four chromosomes i...

Segmental Interchange in Chromosomes of Tradescantia.

Chromosome ring formation has been found in a number of difierent genera. In certain species of Oenothera and of Hypericum and in the monotypic genus Rhoeo, all the chromosomes may be united in a single ring or chain a t meiosis. Ring formation is maintained in these plants by a system of balanced lethals. In Datura, Zea, Pisum and Campanula rings of four or more chromosomes have been described...

Cytogenetics of Hybrids between Zea Mays and Euchlaena Mexicana.

NDOUBTEDLY specific and generic as well as lesser differences may U be largely attributed to differences in the chromosomes. Detailed analysis of gene and chromosome differences between related genera is seldom possible because of sterility and lack of genetical or cytological information. A striking exception is provided by Zea mays L. and Euchlaena mexicana Schrad. Between these distinct spec...

Genetic Analysis of Two Chromosome Interchanges I N Barley from F 2 Data '

HE use of backcross data for the genetic analysis involving an interchange T between two non-homologous chromosomes has been clearly defined and reviewed. JOACHIM (1947) has presented tables to facilitate the use of the product method for the analysis of Fz data involving semisterility. In a selfpollinated plant such as barley, this method presents a convenient tool for the determination of lin...

An Interpretation of the Observed Amount

N an individual heterozygous for an interchange between two non-homoloI gous chromosomes, the observed amount of gene recombination in an interstitial region depends on the frequency of the respective centromere disjunction types and upon the chiasma (crossover) frequency expected for the two interstitial regions of the interchange complex. An interstitial region is considered to be the chromos...
